A web application is an application hosted on a web server that is accessed from a browser and/or hosted on a client machine and accessed from that machines' browser. In other words, it can be hosted from a web server, from a client machine, or from a combination of both, but it always accessed from a web browser which serves as the GUI.
Web applications can be hosted on almost any platform and with a number of programming and scripting languages (Java, PHP, Python, etc.), almost any type of database can be used, and JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and AJAX can be used to build a rich user interface. GoogleMaps, Mapquest, and other internet mapping tools are excellant examples of web applications.

- They can be run from any machine with a web browser.
- They can be accessed from any machine that has an internet or intranet connection.
- Their overhead is usually much lower than proprietary solutions.
- They can be built to fit your needs.
